Those two immune cells are critical in maintaining homeostasis by using apoptotic signaling to take out infected cells in a non-inflammatory way. When inflammasome pathways are activated, the cells secrete highly inflammatory cytokines that can be very destructive to neuronal tissues leading to symptoms of autism and Alzheimer's.
